Mrs. Murphy was first appointed to the Rock Island City Council to complete the unfinished term of Ann Keefe. Muphy was then elected to a 4-year term so she's served 5 years.
She's up for re-election in the Winter of 2011. "I just love the work!" Murphy says. "I like working with people and making my community all it can be." She says her biggest 6th Ward challenge is to keep programs which help people upgrade and maintain the older homes. "We also need a good mix of single family owners and rented housing, particularly because of Augustana College," say Murphy. "We need the balance of both as it keeps life vibrant, but it's important that rental stock doesn't take over neighborhoods. That's why we keep a strong rental inspection program." She enjoyes helping others solve problems. She's also focused on economic development in the east end of Rock Island (Farmall plant land, 14th Avenue corridor and Augie neighborhood). "This gives more people the opportunity to shop Rock Island," she touts. Murphy points to last Fall's Keystone meeting, along with some Moline residents, as her biggest success. Some 130 people jammed St. John's Lutheran Church after a shooting incident. "This shows people care and want to be informed and involved." Mrs. Murphy can be reached at 788-0359 or
