Community Highlights
* On December 12th, 20 neighbors from the 24th/25th Street and 15th Avenue Block Club met at Reid and Kathy Odean’s house for the annual Christmas Potluck. They enjoyed great food, great conversation with one another, a crazy gift exchange, and games. They all pitched in and were able to collect $90 to help a needy family this Christmas. They say they are blessed to live in a friendly neighborhood.
* Members of the 42/43 Street (14—1800 blocks) met at Poor Boy’s Pizza to discuss a variety of issues between themselves and with police officers. In particular, one resident with several vehicles parked on the street . . . concern over a possible drug house . . . and they heard that car burglaries are up in their neighborhood.
* Broadway residents held a meeting at Broadway Presbyterian Church in late October to discuss crime and problem properties with a police officer, a city inspector, and a CCC neighborhood organizer. In particular, they learned what it takes to establish a Neighborhood Watch and heard a bit about Broadway’s Block Club.
* Seven residents of the 36th Street/15th Avenue Block Club met in the home of the
Tambaro’s in late October talking about various concerns like illegal trash dumping and
excessive parking at a busy corner which could cause an accident because of poor sight lines. One neighbor complained about the lack of a locale for leaf bag pick-ups above the hill. Councilwoman Joy Murphy immediately rectified that by asking that bags be placed at the 31st Avenue Library.
* CCC attended the Grow Your Own Statewide Learning Network in Chicago November 18th—21st with 200 people in attendance. Annual networking workshops, best practices and evaluation of GYO cohorts were discussed.
* CCC attended the Quad City 17th Annual Mayors’ Hunger Luncheon at Golden Leaf Banquet Hall, Davenport, November 4th with 300 people attending. This was an annual luncheon to thank agencies who provide basic needs to those in the Quad City Community.
* CCC attended the Problem Properties Task Force at City Hall on November 19th with 11 people attending. The group discussed rental inspection updates, leaf collection and graffiti enforcement.
* CCC attended Lights On for Learning Family Literacy Program at CCC/Church of Peace to showcase the
program running at the Church of Peace. In attendance were Mayor Dennis Pauley, Rock Island County Regional Superintendent of Schools Jim Widdop, Church of Peace Pastor Michael Swartz, and others.
* CCC attended the monthly 11/31 Business Association Luncheon in November at Illinois/Iowa Center For Independent Living which sponsored this month’s meeting with a taco lunch.
