How to Avoid a Stolen Car

You've probably heard this before but a safety-reminder doesn't hurt. Rock Island police urge you to play it safe and reduce the chances of your car being stolen over the winter. Many folks quickly step outside each morning to start and let their car warm up. This unattended running vehicle is an open invitation for theft.

It's against the law to do this...so if its necessary to pre-heat, make every effort to keep the vehicle in sight. Another option is to install an alarm and remote starter, greatly reducing the likelihood of theft. This is also the time of year when there are more thefts of packages from cars. If you don't remove packages, entirely, the put them out of sight in the trunk. Most thefts are crimes of opportunity – don't give 'em the chance to steal. Immediately report any suspicious activity. If the actions turn out not to be criminal, there's no harm in calling the police.
